What’s the difference between IP and CCTV surveillance cameras?
IP surveillance is a digitized and networked alternative to closed-circuit television (CCTV). When an IP system is installed, the camera captures and records footage before sending it through an IP (Internet Protocol) network for storage and review. A CCTV installation, on the other hand, records footage straight onto a local hard drive as part of an isolated system.
Apart from the way in which footage is stored, there are numerous differences between the two systems that should be taken into account when making your choice.
When it comes to video quality, a higher number of pixels results in a sharper and clearer image. While CCTV (analog) cameras can create up to 0.4 megapixels, IP (digital) cameras can produce video up to 10 megapixels, resulting in much higher definition video footage than its analog counterpart.
CCTV installations are the easier of the two, as they do not require any advanced knowledge of networks and configuration. IP cameras, on the other hand, need to be installed by someone with intermediate networking knowledge as a minimum; for larger installations, advanced networking and technical skills are required.
Given the quality of video footage and use of more advanced networking technology, IP installations come at a higher price than CCTV. However, the higher megapixel count sometimes means an IP camera can cover an area that would normally be recorded by two or more CCTV surveillance cameras. As a result, IP can sometimes be a more economical option.
Choosing between an IP or CCTV installation for your office, restaurant or club
In the end, both systems are highly effective forms of security for your home or business. The key advantage of IP cameras is their wireless capabilities and high definition video footage; CCTV cameras can be a more practical solution that’s easy to install and fits your budget.
